African American Mayors Association Statement on Recent Mass Shootings
(Washington, DC) Mayor Oliver Gilbert, III (Miami Gardens, FL), President of the African American Mayors Association (AAMA), released the following statement in response to the senseless violence that took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, and at a Kroger grocery store in Jeffersontown, KY:
“I join 500 African American mayors across the country to offer our collective prayers and condolences for the families of the innocent people killed in these horrific shootings. Hate crimes have no place in our society. We pray for a swift recovery for the wounded, and we offer our deepest gratitude to the police officers, first responders, hospital personnel, and everyday citizens whose compassionate actions helped saved lives.
“As we mourn the lives lost to these senseless acts, we are once again reminded that this is also a time for decisive action on gun safety policies. Mayors must work together to advance proposals that will finally put an end to such tragic gun violence in our communities.”
