AAMA January Call 2019 Featuring Beloved Streets of America & Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School
January 16 @ 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Nearly 900 streets in the U.S. bear the name of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The movement to memorialize Dr. King first gained momentum in the 1980’s after Ronald Reagan signed Dr. King’s birthday into a national holiday, and many MLK streets were once thriving urban districts. Today, however, urban decline and a lack of resources has left most of these streets to now mark some of the most impoverished cities and distressed neighborhoods in the country. Join us as we hear from Melvin White, Beloved Streets of America, and David Harris, Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School, on their joint mission to to reverse the decay of communities surrounding streets named after Dr. Martin Luther King and provide a positive environment for growth.
