Mayor James focuses on improving Kansas City in four areas: Education, Employment, Efficiency and Enforcement. Major accomplishments include efforts to ensure children can read at grade level by third grade; streamlining the city’s business-permit process to encourage development; promoting Kansas City’s status as the nation’s first region with Google Fiber gigabit technology, and helping launch KC NoVA, a focused-deterrence approach to crime reduction. Mayor James has been a voice for common-sense gun control laws, economic development tools and education reform.
A successful lawyer for almost three decades, Mayor James joined Blackwell, Sanders, Matheny, Weary & Lombardi in 1983 and became the first African-American partner in the firm’s history in 1990. In February, 2002, he founded The Sly James Firm, focused on justice for victims and positive outcomes to disputes.
A Marine Corps veteran, Mayor James graduated cum laude from Rockhurst College in Kansas City and earned his law degree, also cum laude, from the University of Minnesota in 1983.
Mayor James is married to Licia Clifton-James and is the proud father of four children.
