Environmental Defense Fund Fellowship

Fellows in this role demonstrate a background or education in public health, environmental science and/or policy, communication, data analytics, grant writing, social work and/or related fields to support AAMA’s capacity to promote Mayors’ efforts in environmental justice advocacy in the petrochemical corridor. The fellow supports AAMA’s central office and/or consult specific cities in the petrochemical corridor to develop recommendations, amplify science and data, support community engagement, and build capacity to further environmental justice advocacy and clean energy initiatives in communities affected by the petrochemical industry. The fellow is encouraged to support AAMA mayors and collaborate with EDF to best position mayors to connect local infrastructure projects with climate and environmental justice goals.

Apply for AAMA’s Future Leaders Fellowship

The African American Mayors Association’s 2024 Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF) is a paid summer program that offers undergraduate students an opportunity to learn and navigate the functions of local government. The Fellowship will be four weeks of intensive public policy advocacy training in Washington, D.C. followed by four weeks of remote work from home, including an on-site visit to work within a member mayor’s policy office during the remote work period. Fellows will receive hands-on training and conduct research centered around racial and economic justice policy. In addition, fellows will be able to connect with AAMA mayors and partners for professional development workshops via videoconference. The 2024 program will place a unique emphasis on the public-private partnerships and how corporations and outside groups influence policymakers. Upon successful completion of the program, Fellows will be awarded a $500 book voucher for the upcoming academic year. The program will start on June 3, 2024, and end July 26, 2024 (Fellows will be onsite in D.C. during the month of June, housing provided).

Pay: $17.00 per hour

AAMA Undergraduate Spring Internship ’24

AAMA’s Economic Mobility Leadership Institute (EMLI) is a premiere 12-month program for a select group of outstanding AAMA member-mayors; designed to provide mayors with the tools to convene life-changing financial literacy forums and develop strategies that increase long-term economic mobility for their respective communities. Participants will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to define economic mobility, apply leading tools and insights to their cities, and create financial literacy forums, including but not limited to topics such as home ownership, insurance, land use/appraisals, student loans, trusts and wills, and wealth management. The focus of EMLI is wealth creation and developing the necessary tools for poverty reduction.

Through carefully crafted strategic plans developed during the first six months of the one-year cohort, EMLI will provide much needed skills and information on two levels: (1) for the Mayors and staff enrichment, and (2) for the constituents of the municipalities.  Discussing issues relevant to their communities, and identifying best practices and shared experiences, will facilitate strategic plans to be implemented during the second half of the cohort.  Participating mayors will have access to experts and learning partners during the first six months of the cohort and will receive grants at the AAMA Annual Meeting to prepare for the strategic plan implementation.
