AAMA Condemns Supreme Court Decision Weakening the Voting Rights Act of 1965

The African American Mayors Association strongly condemned the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which severely weakens the Voting Rights Act’s provisions that protect voters from racial discrimination in redistricting since the law’s passage in 1965.

“We are witnessing a targeted, systematic effort to roll back rights and freedoms that our ancestors fought and died to secure,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott, President of the African American Mayors Association. “That effort did not begin with this case—and make no mistake, it will not end here. While this decision impacts Black voters most immediately, it weakens the foundation of our democracy and threatens the rights and freedoms of every American. AAMA stands with the voters and advocates who are fighting to protect our rights in the courts, in legislatures, and at the ballot box.”
