AAMA Statement on the election of Karen Bass as Mayor of Los Angeles
Published on November 18, 2022
(Washington D.C.) November 18 – The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) congratulates Karen Bass on her historic win in the race to become Mayor-elect of the City of Los Angeles. As the first female to lead the city and the second Black mayor in LA’s history, it is a monumental day for African American mayors across our country.
As African American mayors continue to win elections this cycle, we are excited that for the first time in history, America’s four largest cities will each be led by an African American mayor – Mayor Eric Adams in New York, Mayor-elect Karen Bass in LA, Mayor Lori Lightfoot in Chicago, and Mayor Sylvester Turner in Houston.
While we are proud of these accomplishments, we know there is much work to be done in our cities. AAMA stands to support and empower these local leaders to strengthen their communities and address the pressing needs of their citizens.
