(Washington D.C.) February 16 – The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) has submitted a letter to President Biden and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Secretary Thomas J. Vilsak in support of the confirmation of Dr. Homer L. Wilkes to serve as Deputy Secretary for the Department of Agriculture. Dr. Wilkes’ diverse background in public sector leadership will serve him well in his new role at the Department of Agriculture and AAMA urges swift confirmation.
Dr. Wilkes began his career with USDA over forty years ago as a Budget Manager and quickly advanced within the Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) to serve in several capacities, including Financial Manager, Administrative Officer, State Conservationist for Mississippi, Chief Financial Officer, and Acting Associate Chief of the NRCS. As Acting Associate Chief of the NRCS, he was responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all agency programs throughout all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific Basin. Currently, he is the Undersecretary of Natural Resources and Environment.
“AAMA is confident beyond doubt that Dr. Wilkes is the most qualified and best equipped to fill this important role,” said Little Rock, Arkansas Mayor and AAMA President Frank Scott, Jr. “Dr. Wilkes’ passion, broad experience and extensive relationships on the federal, state and local level will be a valuable asset to the Biden administration and the Department of Agriculture.”
