African American Mayors Association Responds to Government Shutdown

(Washington, DC) – In response to the recent news of a government shutdown after Congress failed to reach a deal on funding, the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) issued the following statement:

“As mayors, we understand the real-world impact a federal government shutdown has on our communities. It doesn’t just disrupt Washington—it puts unnecessary strain on local governments, working families, and essential services that keep our cities running,” said Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson II, President of the African American Mayors Association (AAMA).

“We urge Congress and the administration to put politics aside and come together to ensure the federal government meets its basic responsibilities. Local governments are on the frontlines—protecting public safety, supporting small businesses, and keeping our local economies strong. Our communities need stability, and that starts with a government that works.”
