African American Mayors Association Statement on Fatal Shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina

Published on April 30, 2024

(Washington, DC) – The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) extends its heartfelt prayers to the victims, their families, and the Charlotte community following Monday’s shooting incident. The shooting, which began as a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force tried to serve a warrant, left four law enforcement officers dead and four injured, one of the deadliest recent days for law enforcement.

“The events of yesterday’s shooting are devastating. These law enforcement officers, as well as officers throughout the country, put their safety and their lives on the line every day to protect our communities and for that we are eternally grateful,” said AAMA President Montgomery, AL Mayor Steven Reed. “On behalf of our association, we extend our support to our fellow AAMA Board of Trustee Member Mayor Vi Lyles and the city of Charlotte during such a tragic time.”
