Careers

The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) was established to represent African American mayors and their constituents across the United States. We are a premier organization representing black elected officials, and we focus on empowering our mayors in their communities and elevating their voice on a national stage. We strengthen the executive abilities of our member mayors, and we advocate for public policy positions that benefit our constituents. Throughout the year, AAMA hosts an Annual Conference and other activities bringing together our member mayors, White House officials, Cabinet Secretaries, business leaders, educators, and other dignitaries and thought leaders.

The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) is excited to announce our 2026 Policy Internship Program — a paid opportunity designed for passionate undergraduate students with an interest in policy, civic engagement, or local government.

Running from January to May 2026, this immersive experience takes place in Washington, D.C., where interns will gain firsthand insight into how policies are developed, advanced, and implemented to strengthen communities across the country. Interns will engage in hands-on research, policy analysis, and advocacy training, focusing on key issues that impact cities — from housing and infrastructure to public safety, climate resilience, and civic engagement.

Beyond policy work, interns will have unique opportunities to connect directly with AAMA mayors, national partners, and policy leaders through professional development workshops and networking sessions designed to build lasting career skills and relationships.

The program operates on a hybrid schedule, blending both in-person and virtual work. Interns are required to be based in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas and report to the AAMA office for designated in-person days each week.

If you’re ready to make an impact and learn how local leadership drives national change, we encourage you to apply!
